The main cathedral (duomo) of Saint Andrews dates back to the 6th century and is located in the main piazza where one can relax at one of the outdoor cafes and admire the Oriential style mosaics of its structure. From there, wide malls lead up through a succession of piazzas featuring cafe's, shops and ancient dwellings. The further one penetrates into Amalfi, the more one feels the weight of the towering mountainous backdrop.

Originally Roman, Amalfi was the first Sea Republic of Italy, rivalling the great sea ports of Venice and Genoa. The Maritime Republic of Amalfi was soon to become an important maritime commercial centre trading with the whole of the Italian peninsula, North Africa, the Middle East and the Byzantine Empire. The Republic bought spices, precious stones, carpets and fabrics from the Arabs, and sold them throughout Italy.

In the hinterland, the reminances of great industries in paper making lie hidden under centuries of creepers in lush valleys which can be explored on foot - Valle delle Cartiere, Valle delle Ferriere.
