Campania, Sorrento Peninsula

Sorrento is a lively town, approximately 40 minutes across the bay from Naples and gateway to the Sorrento Peninsula peninsula, an agricultural and fishing area that continues for 14 kms to Punta Campanella, in front of Capri Island.

The peninsula features hilly terrain, with many olive and lemon groves, interrupted by many traditional villages and seaside communities who maintain their traditional lifestyles. The coast is spectacular offering wonderful views, several beaches (pebbles) and good opportunities for snorkelling and swimming in crystalline waters.

Ferry services connect all major centres including Naples, Isle of Capri, Ischia island, Positano, Amalfi. A bus service also connects with the Amalfi coast which is at 40 minutes from Sorrento.

More about the Sorrento Peninsula area

The geographical layout of the Sorrento Peninsula is best appreciated from one of the many ferries and hydrofoils that provide transport between the well known towns of Positano, Naples, Capri and Amalfi.

Arriving from Naples, a long line of shear cliffs block the views of the lively towns of Sant'agnello, Vico Equenza and Sorrento, providing only provocative glimpses of important villas, hotels, historical gardens and colourful promenades along the precipitous clifftops.

The ferry to Capri follows the coast around the peninsula where the cliffs give way to coves and inlets, one hosting the ruins of a Roman villa and a swimming spot known as the 'queens bath'. Several small fishing villages with waterside marinas provide a picturesque foreground to the green hills of the peninsula, mainly olive and lemon groves and the many small villages of the farmers.

From Capri, positioned off the end of the peninsula, the ferry follows the coast down the Bay of Salerno past the siren rocks and coves which hide near perfect pebbly beaches to the rugged Amalfi coast towns of Positano, Praiano and Amalfi.

Arriving by boat is the best way to appreciate the geographical features of the area.
