The villa is located in the middle of The Chapel of Montesiepi and Abbey of San Galgano. This area is of great historical and religious importance for Tuscany. Villa La Cappella was constructed at the same time that the chapel was originally built to serve as a convent. It was later made a civil property and sold privately.
Montesiepi chapel is designed after a Classical mausoleum and the Church of the Tomb in Jerusalem. The building's exterior is a mix of pale travertine and dark brick (a cheaper variation on marble ornamentation seen in southern Tuscany's country areas). The chapel's interior, with its ribless cupola, is particularly striking for its bands of alternate colors. An impressive collection of frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti can be found in the northern chapel. There is also a case containing two macabre relics: two arms.
Its grassy corridors, empty windows, and sky-gazing skies make the Abbey of San Galgano a photographer's paradise. A procession of fantastic shadows is cast by its arches and columns. If you want to see the travertine in its best light, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. You can still enjoy the charm of the country while being close to the bustle of the city, just a 45-minute drive away.
